The 20 foot high palisade or walls enclosed all of the fort buildings as protection for the inhabitants of the fort. A walkway 4 feet below the top of the palisade allowed the men to observe the areas outside of the fort as well as offering defensive positions in a battle.
A square 35 foot high structure was constructed at each of the palisade's corners. These enclosures offered great locations to defend the fort as well as observation posts for activities going on outside the fort.
